Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is a Union Territory in India. For many generations, the farmers in Baramulla were growing maize as a cash crop. Neither do they get enough income nor satisfaction from the same. It takes a long time (around 150 days) to get ready for harvest. The nutrition level in the fodder obtained by maize is also very low. Around one year ago, the Agriculture Department Baramulla introduced sweet corn to a few farmers. They were advised to replace maize with sweet corn. Sweet corn is more economic and useful in comparison to traditional maize. Few farmers who opted for sweet corn as a cash crop ended up relatively pleased. The fodder obtained from sweet corn had better nutritional gains. The project and proposed interventions will help these small farmers in abundant ways. It will add to their income generation sources. This crop will be effective in doubling their income as suggested by successful sweet corn sellers.
